How To - Copy all files your to a new hard drive tips:
by Raymond Garcia

Copy all your files to a new hard drive: If your upgrading or adding a new hard drive to you computer, you will need to copy all your files to your new drive. Replacing your hard drive is as simple as taking the old one out and plugging the new one into the same spot. The challenge in replacing your hard drive is how to copy or transfer all of your existing files and program from the old hard drive to your new hard drive.

One approach for you is to back up all your data and programs from your old hard drive, and then restore them to your new hard drive once it's been installed. This approach hard, but it works.

A easier approach for you to install your new hard drive in your computer as the master drive (set jumpers), and keep your old hard drive installed and change it to your slave or second drive. This way you can copy all of your files and data from your old hard drive to your new hard drive. Plus, you get to keep your old hard drive for more hard drive storage. Believe me, you'll will need all the hard drive storage you can get! WebTechGeek.com

Here's how you want to replace an existing hard drive:

1. Follow the instructions in the how to install a new drive and How to format your hard drive page to install and configure the new hard drive in your computer. First install you new drive then you should initially set the jumper settings to make the new drive your slave drive.

2. Now follow the instructions here (below) to manually copy all your file to a new hard drive. If your using software to copy, run the hard drive copy software to copy the contents of your old drive to your new drive. Maxtor hard drives have a free hard drive copying utility MAX-BLASTER to help you to copy. Symantec's Norton Ghost this programs pretty much automate the process of creating an exact mirror of your old drive on your new drive, including the operating system and data files. WebTechGeek.com

3. Once your finished copying, exit Windows and turn off you Pc. Go back inside your computer system and change the jumper settings on your old drive to the slave setting, and then change the jumper settings on your new drive to the master setting.

4. Assuming that your new hard drive is working fine as your main drive C:, you may reformat your old hard drive (which should now be your drive D:) to wipe off all the old data and operating system. It best to wait a week or two before you format and wipe your old hard drive, you may need some of the files on it.

COPY ALL YOUR WINDOWS 98/ME FILES TO A NEW HARD DRIVE TIPs!

You can make a copy of your Windows 98/Me hard drive. Including all the applications you have installed. Over to a new hard drive. By Raymond, WebTechGeek.com. Make sure you have one or two Windows 98 emergency startup boot disks!

5. In Fdisk, select create DOS partition or logical DOS drive, and then select and create a primary DOS partition. Exit fdisk and restart the computer. WebTechGeek.com

6. In windows go to explorer and right-click on the D drive ( the new drive ) and select Format, full and copy system files.

7. In Windows explorer, choose view, folder options, click the view tab, and select show all files.

8. You need to disable virtual memory. By turning off virtual memory and rebooting your computer to get rid of WIN389.swp. Before you copy your windows folder to your new drive.

9. Copy everything from C drive to D drive. You don't want to copy WIN389.swp it's located in your windows folder on the C drive. You can right-drag all the files and folders from C to D drive. But not the WIN389.swp! disable virtual memory first and reboot to get rid of the WIN389.swp file.

9. The alternative to right-drag and drop is to: click start button, click Run, and then type in: ( XCOPY C:\ D:\ /c /e /f /h /r /s ). By WebTechGeek.com Don't XCopy in MS-DOS mode it will destroy long filenames.

10. Now you need use ScanDisk on your new drive (D). and check for errors. When error checking is complete, exit Windows and turn off your computer. Remove your old hard drive, set jumpers on the slave to master.

11. Start Windows! if you get an boot error use your Windows boot disk to fix it and or install windows, Finish.!
