What To Do with Old CDs
By Raymond, WebTechGeek -
Updated on 01-04-05: Happy new years to all. Today I received two of the new AOL 9.0 CD offer in the mail. And ... more here!
Updated on 10-01-02: It's been long time
since I've looked at this page, in fact I forget all about
this page until someone e-mail me a question about this
page. I posted this page "what to do with old CDs?'
about three years ago in 2000 and was one of the first 10 page
that I posted on my new web site WebTechGeek.com.
The question of what to do with old free media is an
old question asked by many web publishers over the years
(what to with those AOL disks), but the media has changed
from diskettes to CDs. My web site has changed from frames
to tables, and I stopped drinking hot tea and now drink
ice tea (maybe too much because I find my self up at 3:A.M.
working on my web site a lot). Someday in future the question
maybe “what to with old free DVD's we get in the
mail?” or maybe “ what to do with all those
free pocket PCs with ads on them that we get in the mail?”.
I have saved most all of the free CDs that I get,
some I get from the mail and some from magazines. How
many you ask? (I'm glad you asked) over 250 old CDs, 105
AOL (is that why AOL is the #1 ISP?), 20 Earthlink, 17
Prodigy, 15 Compuserve, 11 Juno, 15 MSN, 6 Netcom, 4 AT&T,
4Pacific Bell, 3 Mindspring, 2 People PC, 1 Sprint, 1
Linkonline, and about 70 miscellaneous CD, free game &
program demos (only a geek would count old CDs). I've
heard some of the older .com CDs maybe collectable's.
So maybe you should hang on to those older CDs, and make
coasters out of that new one.
This is the original post:
Do you have a lot of old free CDs laying around the house,
that can be a real big problem. OK it's not that big of
a problem, but it 3:A.M. as I write this, and after 3
cups of tea, It seems like a big problem. You know all
those old AOL CDs are everywhere, like high-tech barnacles,
attached to every magazine, newspaper, and even in bathroom
tissue roll.
I get about 10 CDs a week in the mail.
AOL alone probably has distributed enough CDs to pave
Los Angeles. While some might say, that's a good very
suggestion, getting rid of old CDs by paving the Los Angeles
~ I have more serious suggestions.
Everyone's heard of using CDs as coasters
-- in fact, as I write this, my cup of tea is resting
on the old CD that came in the mail. It works better if
you leave the paper sleeve on. You can Cut a 1-inch by
1-inch adhesive cork into four equal squares, and stick
each square to the underside of a CD near the outer rim.
Cover with felt or use a CD labeling kit to make cool
label. CDs as coasters are useful, but passé.
We all have a collection of useless CDs
( I save all my old CDs), and should be able to put them
to some use. Here's just a couple of things I do with
mine:
I
used thumb~tacks to tack them to the wall around my wall
speakers, or just make a cool design on the wall. I also
made a cool light switch cover with one, see pictures.
It gives the light switch a cool tech geek look! Use the
old switch cover to mark the screw holes on the CD, and
drill.
