What To Do with Old CDs
WebTechGeek -

Updated on 01-04-05: Happy new years to all. Today I received two of the new AOL 9.0 CD offer in the mail. And ... more here!

Updated on 10-01-02: It's been long time since I've looked at this page, in fact I forget all about this page until someone e-mail me a question about this page. I posted this page "what to do with old CDs?' about three years ago in 2000 and was one of the first 10 page that I posted on my new web site WebTechGeek.com.

The question of what to do with old free media is an old question asked by many web publishers over the years (what to with those AOL disks), but the media has changed from diskettes to CDs. My web site has changed from frames to tables, and I stopped drinking hot tea and now drink ice tea (maybe too much because I find my self up at 3:A.M. working on my web site a lot). Someday in future the question maybe “what to with old free DVD's we get in the mail?” or maybe “ what to do with all those free pocket PCs with ads on them that we get in the mail?”.

I have saved most all of the free CDs that I get, some I get from the mail and some from magazines. How many you ask? (I'm glad you asked) over 250 old CDs, 105 AOL (is that why AOL is the #1 ISP?), 20 Earthlink, 17 Prodigy, 15 Compuserve, 11 Juno, 15 MSN, 6 Netcom, 4 AT&T, 4Pacific Bell, 3 Mindspring, 2 People PC, 1 Sprint, 1 Linkonline, and about 70 miscellaneous CD, free game & program demos (only a geek would count old CDs). I've heard some of the older .com CDs maybe collectable's. So maybe you should hang on to those older CDs, and make coasters out of that new one.

This is the original post: Do you have a lot of old free CDs laying around the house, that can be a real big problem. OK it's not that big of a problem, but it 3:A.M. as I write this, and after 3 cups of tea, It seems like a big problem. You know all those old AOL CDs are everywhere, like high-tech barnacles, attached to every magazine, newspaper, and even in bathroom tissue roll.

I get about 10 CDs a week in the mail. AOL alone probably has distributed enough CDs to pave Los Angeles. While some might say, that's a good very suggestion, getting rid of old CDs by paving the Los Angeles ~ I have more serious suggestions.

Everyone's heard of using CDs as coasters -- in fact, as I write this, my cup of tea is resting on the old CD that came in the mail. It works better if you leave the paper sleeve on. You can Cut a 1-inch by 1-inch adhesive cork into four equal squares, and stick each square to the underside of a CD near the outer rim. Cover with felt or use a CD labeling kit to make cool label. CDs as coasters are useful, but passé.

We all have a collection of useless CDs ( I save all my old CDs), and should be able to put them to some use. Here's just a couple of things I do with mine:

I used thumb~tacks to tack them to the wall around my wall speakers, or just make a cool design on the wall. I also made a cool light switch cover with one, see pictures. It gives the light switch a cool tech geek look! Use the old switch cover to mark the screw holes on the CD, and drill.

Suggestions!

1. Suggestion: Use as a toe tags in a mortuary, Great for identifying dead computer Tech~Geeks!

2. CD earrings: eyebrow rings and nose rings. Depending on your body-piercing capacity, CDs can even be worn as navel rings, but they tend to interfere with getting dressed.

3. Good Suggestion: "Nikki" turns junk CDs into kitsch art, using the unwanted discs as components of holiday decorations, doorknob hangers, necklaces, and more.

4. Good Suggestion: "101 uses for AOL disks" has the largest collection I've seen, although some of the items are unusual.

5. Crafts using old CDs: 3D suncatcher: Take those scratched-up, unplayable CD's and create a great sun-catcher that children will absolutely enjoy and spend hours watching, here!

6. Reader Suggestion: If you're into woodworking, you've got several circular saw blades. You can use the CDs as dividers to separate adjacent saw blades on a single peg, so the teeth don't hit each other and chip or get dull. This is actually quite commonly done among woodworkers.

8. CD-ROM's in the Microwave: Not for kids! Kids don't try this! read more here!

9. CD Disco Ball: You can make your own cool disco ball using old your CDs.
The Steps: First cut up the old CDs into 1/2-inch or 1-centimeter squares. Now glue them to the outside of some kind of ball or spherical object. Put a string through the spherical object and hang it. Now shine lights (best multicolored) onto your cool disco ball. Now your have a cool CD disco ball.

10. Reader Suggestion: Spinning Space Ship Toys for kids: - This ones easy. All you need is one old CD and two lids from 7-11 Slurpies cup.

How: Just glue a Slurpy lid to each side of an old CD using a super glue or low temp glue Gen. You may want to use two CD's and glue the word sides together so that both sides of the space ship are pretty. Now let the kids Spin them on a flat surface like you would a spinning top or jack.

11. New Years CD Banner: A fun banner to display at your New Years Party! here!

Suggestion
WebTechGeek

Here's an old email suggestion I found in my backup email folder from 2002/2003.

When my grape vines are at the peak of sweetness, the birds manage to target the vines before we ever get to enjoy the grapes.  Now, I have discovered a sure cure to keep them at bay until we can harvest what we want.  I collect all the AOL CD's as possible from stores, mail, and neighbors.  I hang the CD's on fishing line in various places on my grape vines.  The vines without the CD's get the grapes eaten by birds, but the vines with the CD's are left completely alone by the feathered critters.

I suppose they will work for other fruits, but the grape vines are the only fruit I grow.  My garden welcome the birds to keep the bugs at bay.

So, keep your grapes for yourself by using those wonderful AOL CD's!

A friend of mine took hundreds of cd's and glued them on the ceiling of her
room (shiny side up) and then put a clear coat of polyurethane over them...
cool geek room!!!

Amy

Hang the cd roms on your fruit tree's to keep the birds away from the fruit.
