OpenOffice.org For Windows is an free Open Source office suite offered as an alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite. OpenOffice is based on Sun Microsystem's StarOffice, but has been under independent development for some time.Included in the suite are Writer (a word processor), Calc (a spreadsheet editor), Draw (a 2D and 3D image creation tool), and Impress (a presentation solution). Functionality is impressive on all counts. The suite's native file types are based on XML, so they save to small, powerful files.
The suite is able to open nearly all Microsoft file types, and can save to Microsoft file types through Office XP as well. Writer offers style guides, an advanced spell-checker, Version (a system for logging changes to a document for comparison over time), AutoCorrect Word Completion, indexing and bibliographic functions that are automatic and make it easier to navigate your documents, and an advanced layout management system. Calc offers StarBASIC macro functionality and add-In functions in Java or C/C++ using the OpenOffice.org API. DataPilot allows you to import data from outside sources, including ODBC and JDBC.
There is a Scenario Manager to analyze "What-If-When" scenarios, and you can graph data in 2D or 3D charts. Draw offers easy 2D and 3D image creation, and FontWork allows you to reshape text. You can draw Bezier curves, and there are extensive color palettes, Raster tools, and effects.
