Sharp
releases world's first picture-snapping fax machine
Sharp
releases world's first picture-snapping fax machine:
As if camera-equipped cellphones were not enough, Japanese
hi-tech firm Sharp kicked off sales of the world's first
picture-snapping fax machine. The so-called "fappy",
which began selling at major electronics stores nationwide
for around 58,000 yen (483 dollars), allows the user to
take pictures, connect to the Internet, print faxes and
talk on the phone.
The 3.1 million pixel quality digital camera module can
also disconnect from the main body to be used as a normal
camera.
If one cannot bear to be away from home for too long,
the machine can also be programmed to take pictures of
one's residence and mail the images to one's phone, the
company said.
Sharp Corp. hopes to produce an average of 20,000 units
per month, along with 10,000 units of a "fappy"
that comes with a cordless phone, said spokesman Yukiyasu
Uno. Sales for now are limited to Japan, he said.

NEC
to Offer TV-Capable Cellphone Handsets by 2005:
(Reuters) - Japan's NEC Corp unveiled a prototype cellphone
handset capable of receiving digital broadcasting signals,
enabling users to not only make calls and take photos,
but to watch TV.
NEC officials said the electronics conglomerate
is the first handset manufacturer in Japan and probably
in the world to unveil a trial model with a digital TV
function. The company is targeting a trial launch for
commercial models by 2005.
Regular services for terrestrial digital television broadcasting
are set to begin by the end of 2003 in Japan, while broadcasting
designed for mobile terminals is expected to start in
the next few years.
The trial model, which is a little bulkier than regular
handsets, allows slightly more than an hour of TV viewing.
"We expect high demand for features like TV by people
on commuter trains and at train stations," Akira
Kato, senior manager at NEC's Mobile Service Development
Laboratory, told a news conference.

Nokia 3650
Nokia
Unveils New Video Phone: - Nokia the world's
largest cell phone maker, unveiled a video handset Friday,
its latest gadget in the struggle to win new customers
and overcome a rough patch in the highly competitive wireless
market.
The Nokia 3650 is the company's first mobile phone that
can take moving pictures and send them to another phone.
Similar models from other companies have been launched
in Japan, while other phones on the market can take and
send still pictures.
Nokia's 3650 device, which has a big color screen and
weighs 4.55 ounces, is the size of a glasses case. It
will cost $449-499 excluding subsidies. The phone will
work on five continents using the GSM network.
Nokia said the 3650 device incorporated a camcorder for
filming images as well as other technology to allow users
to download and view real-time video content. The 3510i
will cost 200-300 euros without subsidies, Putkiranta
said.
The
3650 features a color screen, a camera and video player
and has the possibility of an extended memory for storing
pictures, games and other files. It provides users with
multimedia messaging and video clips, as well as access
to the Internet and e-mail.
The new phone is expected to go on sale globally early
next year for $450 to $500. It can be used on networks
in the United States and Europe, which use different frequencies.www.nokia.com

FireWire KeyChain
The
WiebeTECH 1GB FireWire KeyChain: FireWire Keychain
is the industrys first portable keychain-sized storage
device. It is housed in a tiny, attractive, rugged enclosure
which may be slipped onto a keychain. An innovative product
which will solve storage problems for users and create
new marketplaces, it accepts any CompactFlash or IBM MicroDrive,
and is user upgradable.
The unit is milled and machined out of solid block of
aluminum not some multi-part plastic shell waiting
to get cracked or crushed. I hate light and flimsy construction
materials. The FWKC is anodized in blue to give it both
some cool tech look, as well as to reduce
aluminums natural tendency to oxidize.
The FireWire port is flush with the right-side of the
unit. The top has a panel on its underside that is secured
by two flush screws. Removing the screws and the panel
reveals its innards.
Because of its FireWire interface, the FireWire Keychain
can be attached to virtually any personal computer. The
FireWire host port to which it is attached provides power
for its operation. As a result, there are no batteries
or external power supplies. Its fully self-contained.

Samsung's
VOD Phone:
Samsung's
VOD Phone: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS MARKETS MOBILE PHONE
WITH COLOR MOTION PICTURE CAPABILITY. Samsung Electronics,
the first company ever to commercialize a CDMA system,
is now marketing the world's first cdma2000 1x mobile
handset with the capability to receive motion pictures
in color. Development of Samsung's VOD Phone was completed
last December. The handset supports video on demand (VOD),
audio on demand (AOD) and other advanced functions slated
for IMT-2000.
The Color VOD Phone comes with a 2.04"
TFT-LCD that can reproduce clear motion picture images
in 200,000 different color shades. The handset can send
and receive text data wirelessly at up to 144Kbps as well
as supports VOD and AOD. Thus, mobile access is possible
to various contents services with color moving pictures
such as music, videos, Internet broadcasts, animation,
news reports and so on. The handset is based on cdma2000
1x, the first next-generation wireless technology commercialized
in Korea, and comes with a MPEG4 motion picture decoder
and stereo player built in. The high-performance color
TFT-LCD used on the VOD Phone was developed and produced
exclusively by the Samsung Electronics Semiconductor Division.
It can display 12 lines of text at once
and provides even better clarity than the current black-and-white
versions. Windows User Interface enhances ease of use,
while the built-in telephone directory can store up to
2,400 numbers. The handset can be linked to a PC to download
customized icons, images, and ring melodies or to play
Internet games in color. The latest Samsung cellular phone
presents significant change of the mobile technology by
switching from the black-and-white display and transmission
of data only to a color display and Video On Demand phone.
Even more, by the introduction of the VOD phone in the
market, the world will enjoy the IMT-2000 service, futuristic
technology for the human being.
Samsung will market the new VOD Phone alongside an STN-LCD
model that can reproduce 256 different colors. This move
will help Samsung to maintain its leadership position
in color mobile communications and to usher in the era
of wireless multimedia. The STN-LCD model works from the
cdma2000 1x platform and can send and receive text data
and color images at up to 144Kbps. It can be used to access
games and various other mobile services and is expected
to quickly replace handsets with black-and-white
