About the Free Sony PSP System Web Site: As I mentioned last week, there's a web site the offers a free Sony PSP gaming system if you sign-up. "Participate in one (1) online offer. Refer some friends to do the same. We'll ship out your order for FREE!"

Well it's not as easy as it sounds. I signed-up for the free PSP offer and it's a lot harder to get that free PSP system then I though it would be. First I had to fill out their online form with my name, address, city, state, zip and phone number. Then there's three to four pages of optional offers to see, the last page has the must sign-up offers ads.

On the last offer page you must sign-up with one of the offers to complete your participation. You will need a credit card to participate in any one of the offers. I sign-up for the Columbia House DVD Club that was $12. charged to my credit card. There are other offers for you to choose from like sign-up for a credit card, Book club, music service, and others.

About 5 minuets after I joined I received a call asking if I wanted to refinance my home. I said no thank you. They said they received my name and number from the free PSP offer site and that I wanted to refinance my home. That's the only spam call I received so far. So if you join the free PSP offer you may get spam calls.

I logged in to my account at the free PSP to check out my status. Looking at my status page, it said I haven't completed an offer yet, but I did. Looking for information and help on the page I found that it can take up to 15 days to get credit for completing an offer. I waited 7 days, then I sent an message asking why I didn't get credit for completing on offer. The next day I received credit, I had completed my requirements but, no free Sony PSP yet.

Now I need to get 5 friends to sign-up and complete one offer each. Will at this time I have over 5 people who have joined under me, but all have "offer not completed". I think joining is very easy, but getting credit for completing an offers can takes long and is very difficult. Some People may never get credit for completing an offer.

I'll wait a little longer before I call this a total waste of time. When and if I do get my free PSP system, I'll let you know here. Then you can decide for yourself if you want to give this free Sony PSP offer a try. If you have a comment of question post it in the Sony PSP Message Board Q&A.

Updated: 5/12/05 No Free PSP for me :( It has been over a month. This free PSP web site offer is a total waste of time.

sony pspSony Sold 500,000 PSPs in Two Days in N. America: Sony Corp. sold 500,000 units of its PlayStation Portable handheld video game device in the first two days after its North American release, about half the units the company had aimed to provide retailers, Sony said.

The $249 PSP Value Pack came out March 24 in the United States. There were mixed reactions to the early sales, with some analysts saying the device was not selling as fast as some large chains might have expected.

But Sony said the PSP generated a total of $150 million in first-week sales at North American retailers. It said sales remained strong through the rest of the first week but did not quantify what that meant or give details on second-week sales.

The PSP came out late last year in Japan and has sold more than 1 million units there to date.

Sony postponed the European launch of the PSP indefinitely in order to ensure it would have an adequate supply for the U.S. launch, which it promised would be about 1 million units on the first day.

Analysts expect sales of handheld games to drive industry growth in 2005. Most forecast U.S. software sales growth of about 5 percent this year. (Reuters)

PSP chat over IRC, AOL Instant Messenger coming soon: "I was on IRC, and someone mentioned how cool it would be to use their PSP on Wi-Fi at Starbucks to talk to people over IRC. I said, 'I can do that', so I began working on it immediately," said Robert Balousek, creator of PSPIRC (http://www.pspirc.com)." He is starting work on a new project that would let PSP users chat on the AOL Instant Messenger network.

welcome to pspirc.com, with this script you will be able to access irc from within a sony psp. because of its simple nature, you should also be able to use it from most feature lacking web browers (ie: phones, pdas). best of all, it is free! Click it out here!

Hackers Add Web, Chat to PSP Video Game Player: Sony Corp.'s new PlayStation Portable is turning into a great tool for Web browsing, comics reading and online chat -- and it also happens to play video games, movies and music, if you prefer that sort of thing.

The $249 PSP handheld video game player went on sale in the United States on March 24, and it took very little time before techies added the kinds of functions to the PSP that Sony did not include -- and may never have intended. One man needed only 24 hours to get a working client for Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, an older messaging platform.

"I was on IRC, and someone mentioned how cool it would be to use their PSP on Wi-Fi at Starbucks to talk to people over IRC. I said, 'I can do that', so I began working on it immediately," said Robert Balousek, creator of PSPIRC (http://www.pspirc.com), in an email interview.

Balousek said as many as 100,000 people may have visited the IRC client, and he is starting work on a new project that would let PSP users chat on the AOL Instant Messenger network.

Hacking new video game hardware is old hat -- rare is the console that does not get its own version of the Linux operating system from enterprising developers. But the gaming and hacking communities embraced the PSP with speed rarely seen in the console world -- a nod, perhaps, to its portability.

Other "hacks" include a way to transfer TV shows recorded by the TiVo digital video recorder to the PSP (http://www.zatznotfunny.com/ttg.htm#psp); a program for reading ebooks, (http://gamefries.blogspot.com/2005/03/how-to-get-e-books-on- your-psp.html); and a viewer for comics downloaded from the Internet (http://www.8bitjoystick.com/archives/jake_how_to_read_web_ comics_on_a_playstation_portable.php).

Much of the new PSP functionality comes from using the Web browser built into the racing game "Wipeout Pure," which was meant to go to a Sony site. By changing some of the PSP's network settings, the browser can be pointed to an Internet portal.

A number of people have already set up such portals, formatted to fit in the PSP's screen and offering links and a place to enter Web addresses. The technology blog Engadget has rounded up a number of those links.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the Japanese conglomerate's U.S. gaming unit, did not respond to requests for comment.

But the tinkerers suggest Sony probably did not have their work in mind when they released the PSP. Balousek said the company had only left small loopholes for outsiders to use.

The development community wishes that would change, as evidenced by an open plea to Sony posted April 5 on the Web site PS2dev.org (http://www.ps2dev.org), which is dedicated to the development of open-source software projects for the PS2.

"I suggest to Sony that they should work with us to develop a method to allow home-brew software" using technology to protect Sony copyrights," the site's editor "Oobles" wrote. (Reuters)

Sony releases two new Memory Stick Pro Duo models: 1GB and 2GB. Sony is coming up with higher capacity Memory Sticks. The interesting one is the 2GB High Speed Memory Stick PRO Duo. Transfer speed: 80Mbps (10MB/sec) Price open. Great just what I needed a 2GB Speed Memory Stick Duo. I would be glad to get a 1GB Memory Stick Duo. I think everyone is sold out of the 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. So if your thinking of buying one good luck!

Update: I was searching the Internet for cheap Memory Stick Duo 1GB for my PSP. I found a great deal on new SanDisk 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo for only $120. At two Internet stores, buy.com & J&R.com. The bad news is that know one has them in stock, there "On Order" or "Temporarily Sold Out". You can place your order today and you will receive the product when it arrives. One more thing J&R.com doesn't charge tax, Buy.com does.

Online-enabled PSP to hit Korea in May: Sony's PSP will hit Korea with streaming content services and online gaming capabilities at launch.

According to sources in Korea, Sony Computer Entertainment will launch its PlayStation Portable, or PSP, in that country on May 2. Unlike the Japan and North America markets, the first shipment of the handheld will come with Internet features ready for use. Sony is partnering with KT Corp., a major wireless Internet service provider in Korea, to offer easy online connectivity and other services.

Similar to the North American launch, Korean consumers will be limited to the Value Pack bundle of the PSP (which will be priced at 328,000 won, or about $320, in that market). The Value Pack will come with the PSP unit, an AC adapter, battery pack, headphones with remote control, a carrying pouch, a cleaning cloth, a strap band, and a 32MB Memory Stick Duo. But that market's Value Pack will have one big difference from the unit's previous releases: out-of-the-box online connectivity.

The first 100,000 units sold of the Korean PSP Value Pack will come with a Network Utility UMD and a limited-time membership for wireless Internet service, in addition to a UMD movie of Spider-Man 2.

By tapping the Network Utility UMD functionality, gamers in Korea will be able to enjoy a number of other online services in addition to games, including Web browsing, an online movie player, and an online music player.

The first shipments of the Value Pack also come with a membership for NESPOT, the wireless Web service offered by KT. Gamers who register to NESPOT will be able to access more than 14,000 wireless hot spots within Korea. They can also opt to get NESPOT APs (Access Points) installed in their houses for no additional charge. The first month of NESPOT usage will be free; thereafter, gamers will be charged a flat rate of 5,000 won ($4.92) per month. Full story at GameSpot news.

Rumor; PSP Background Color Change Hack: There is a rumor on the Internet that you hack the PSP OS settings and change the background color on your PSP. It's no hack, the PSP changes colors every month (see page 89 in the PSP manual). If you change the date on your PSP the color will change, so you can pick your favorite color of the month. Hacking the PSP, let the games begin: You know once those gaming geek get their hands on the Sony PSP system the hacking will soon start and it has. One crafty person has figured out how to unlock the PSP web browser present in the game Wipeout Pure.

"As far as I can figure out, its NOT part of the firmware of the Sony PSP...But this can be made into a general purpose browser if you create a portal-like site to jumps to links. When you select "Go to home page" it returns you to the portal site (index.html). So that's an easy way out.

Yes you can use input (we googled stuff), when you enter a text box and press X the PSP pops up the Keyboard API (remember there's alot of API to be taken advantage of with the PSP). After that its as simple as any other input on the PSP.

The way I loaded up my own "page" is by setting up my FreeBSD machine with some DNS entries that point ingame.scea.com and webcluster.scea.com and all NS's for scea.com to my internal LAN machine. So then I changed the PSP's NameServer settings to point to the server on my local LAN (FreeBSD machine). When the Wipeout client accesses http://ingame.scea.com/wipeout/index.html it gets my LOCAL file because of the DNS mapping. It's all pretty simple after that. I made a static page with a bunch of spring-board (or portal-like I guess) links to access from the PSP."

"While most gamers were content to spend their first few hours of time with PSP gaming, one crafty person going by the handle 'roto' figured out a way to unlock the web browser present in Wipeout Pure's downloadable content area."

"If you have a PSP, set your Primary DNS server to 67.171.70.72 -- I've got a portal of sorts up. Set your secondary DNS to your router so if my IP changes or my machine goes down, you'll still be able to access the internet. Then just fire up Wipeout and head to the downloads section, you should see this:"

Sony answers PSP dead-pixel gripes:

Several people on the Internet were complaining about dead pixels on their PSP gaming systems. My PSP has no dead pixels, but one out of four of my pc monitors has some dead pixels.

Sony has an official response. The Sony rep suggested that PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue should try the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them. "If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP] warranty," the rep said.

Each PSP comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is "determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the "repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or refurbished product at SCEA's option."

Users with pixel problems should contact SCEA for instructions on exchanging their PSP after a week or two of use, company says.

Sony PSP Connect: Free Videos for the PSP: Sony offers via their Connect service free video downloads for the Sony PSP. Sony also explains with a tutorial how to download, transfer and play video on the PSP.

The Connect PSP site offers a setup.zip download that only is a video file with the correct folder structure to configure the correct folders on the memory stick. You do not need to download that. Just create the folders MP_ROOT/100MNV01 on the Memory stick. The video in the setup is only a Sony welcome message.

Sony PSP Connect hosts currently 20 videos for free download. Commercials, Movie Trailers, comic episodes are amongst the clips. Sony says each week new clips are made available. The clips have different length. For some at least a 128MB Memory stick Pro DUO is necessary. Better buy a 512MB Sony Memory stick PRO DUO.

I downloaded the Speed Racer Episode 9 The videos come as zip files. In the zip file are a MP4 video file and a THM thumbnail file. Great to watch on the PSP. You can download here!

Disney to Release Films for Sony PSP Game Device: The home video arm of the Walt Disney Co. said it would release movies in the newly-developed UMD format for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation Portable handheld video game and media device.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment said it would release five movies this spring: "National Treasure," "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "Reign of Fire," "Kill Bill Vol. 1" and "Hero." More titles will be announced during the year, it said.

The UMD, or Universal Media Disc, holds about three times the capacity of a regular CD. It was developed specifically for Sony's PSP, to be released in North America on March 24.

Disney is the first major Hollywood studio other than Sony's own Sony Pictures division to announce UMD support. Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., a smaller independent film studio, is also backing UMD.

Disney did not announce pricing for the UMD movies. Sony has said it would charge $20 and up for UMD films. (Reuters)

Sony Delays European PlayStation Portable Launch: Sony is delaying the European launch of its hotly anticipated PlayStation Portable gaming device by several months to ensure it can supply enough units for its U.S. launch.

The PSP, a sleek multimedia gadget that Sony hopes will be its first big success in consumer electronics since the PlayStation 2 five years ago, is already on sale in Japan and will hit U.S. stores on March 24.

Sony's factories have been unable to churn out enough PSPs to launch them simultaneously across the world. The company will wait to see whether it can keep up with demand in the U.S. before setting a date for Europe.

"It's been deferred. We were originally hoping for an end of fiscal year (March 31) launch, but now that's not going to be the case," a Sony spokesman told Reuters Tuesday. "It is likely to be a matter of a few months rather than a few weeks -- it's a matter of allocation." "When it launches in the U.S., they will have 1 million units at launch and continuity of supply thereafter," he added.

The PSP, which Sony hopes will be as big of a hit as Apple's iPod music player, launched in Japan last December and remains in extremely limited supply there after the shipping of about 1.2 million units.

When the PlayStation 2 console was in short supply last Christmas, Sony resorted to the costly option of shipping units to the United States from China via air freight.

Sony games guru Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of the PlayStation, took on a diminished role at the company last week as part of a corporate shake-up that installed U.S. Sony head Howard Stringer as CEO of the entire company. (AP)

Review: PlayStation Portable Is Slick: AP has a review By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology Writer. Here are a few highlights from the review, basically he likes it.

Handheld video game machines have finally grown up with the PlayStation Portable from Sony Corp. The PSP, however, has the edge with its versatility, raw power and chiseled good looks.

Like some diminutive monolith from "2001: A Space Odyssey," the PSP looks as if formed from a single black slab of plastic. And if the sleek design doesn't grab you, wait until you turn it on and see the sharp 4.3-inch liquid crystal screen.

The $250 PSP Value Pack, which goes on sale in North America on March 24, includes the PSP, stereo headphones, a 32-megabyte Memory Stick Duo, battery and charger, a wrist strap and soft carrying case.

Included are two of Sony's proprietary 1.8-gigabyte Universal Media Discs. One is a sampler of music, movies and video games. The other is the movie "Spider-Man 2." The UMDs, about the size of a silver dollar, were a snap to load into the 10-ounce device.

About 24 games, each in the $40 price range, should be available when the PSP launches. UMD movies are expected to cost about as much as DVD movies, though you won't be able to drop a UMD into a DVD player, as the two formats are incompatible.

With a 16:9 aspect ratio (meaning it looks like a movie screen) and a resolution of 480 by 272 pixels, the PSP's crisp, bright graphics are spectacular. Watching "Spider-Man 2," I felt as if I was holding some artifact from the future, amazed I was able to enjoy a feature film on such a small screen without squinting.

Glare was a problem, especially outdoors. Get used to seeing your face on the screen.

There's a cleaning cloth included, and good thing: the glossy black exterior is easily smudged marring the otherwise gorgeous appearance. On such a pristine surface, even tiny bits of dust and grease really stand out.

The PSP has been described as a PlayStation 2 console that fits in your hands, and for the most part it's true. But you can't play PS2 games on the PSP, and vice versa.

It may be the most expensive portable games system available, costing $100 more than the dual-screen Nintendo DS, but it's also by far the most powerful. I played two games from Sony's 989 Sports division, "Gretzky NHL" and "World Tour Soccer." Indeed, they looked almost but not quite as good as similar games I've seen on the PS2.

Sony doesn't supply the required USB cable to transfer pictures or songs from your computer, nor is there any included software to organize such files. I had to drag and drop individual files, a tedious process. And it didn't take long to fill up the measly 32 megabytes. Saved games also are stored on the memory cards, further pinching their capacity.

To avoid swapping cards or losing them, I bought a more spacious 512-MB card on the Internet for $90.

It was an easy, nearly automatic process to connect to a local Wi-Fi hotspot, which will enable gamers to soon challenge each other across time zones. You can also play against as many as 15 other nearby PSPs on an ad hoc wireless network.

The replaceable lithium-ion battery took over two hours to fully charge. I watched "Spider-Man 2," about an hour and a half long, with the screen brightness and stereo sound maxed.

That drained about half the battery, giving me a few extra hours to play games before I had to recharge.

Sony predicts the battery will last between three and six hours, depending on use. Movies and games are especially power-hungry because they draw information from the spinning UMDs.

After years of stumbling in a consumer electronics industry it pioneered, Sony may be a bit premature in declaring the PSP a "21st Century Walkman."

But for games, it's an attractive, uncompromising system that successfully takes the true power of video games out of the living room and into your hands. (AP)

More Movies for Sony PSP: Lions Gate Opens Door to Sony Handheld Device: Lions Gate Entertainment announced it will release a selection of movies that can be played on Sony Corp.'s PSP handheld device, making it the first film company that isn't related to Sony to support the new format.

"Saw," "Open Water" and "The Punisher," along with such catalog titles as "Total Recall" and "Rambo: First Blood," will be among an initial 12 movies the company is releasing on Universal Media Discs (UMDs).

"When we first saw the machine and started talking to Sony, we immediately decided it was going to be a winner, both from the gaming perspective and from the perspective of people watching movies on the go," Lions Gate Entertainment president Steve Beeks said.

Beeks noted that Lions Gate has earned a reputation for supporting most new technologies, most recently including DVD9, DVD18 and HD-DVD. In the case of PSP, however, Beeks said there was a considerable amount of crossover between the target market for the hardware and the titles Lions Gate chose for it.

"The typical buyer of the machine -- a young male gamer -- also happens to be the core demographic to whom our films generally appeal, so it dovetails nicely not only with out past and current theatrical releasing but also with our library, where we have a lot of action/special effects films," Beeks said. "These are films that have done very well with each new evolutionary step. For us, it was a natural."

Other genres will be added as the format gains popularity in the marketplace, he said.

Retail pricing for Lions Gate's UMDs will be similar to DVDs, with new releases selling for $20-$30 and library titles $10-$20.

Beeks said he expects some consumers to purchase one format over another, with a few even buying both. But he believes PSP users will increase the overall number of movies sold.

"We actually believe people who buy the UMD would not have bought it on DVD," he said. "There are people who will want UMD because of the portability. Maybe they're already taking the games with them out of the house, and they're bigger gamers than they are movie watchers."

Movies, like games, must be in the UMD format to play on the PSP. These discs are smaller than a DVD at only 60mm diameter but have a capacity of up to 1.8 GB of digital data. (Hollywood Reporter)

Sony promises 1 million PSP: Sony Computer Entertainment America said it will put 1 million PSP portable video game players on North American retail shelves for its March 24 launch, the company said, a figure double what some analysts had expected.

The PSP launched in Japan last December and remains in extremely limited supply there, having shipped nearly 1.2 million units to date.

The PSP will retail for $249 at launch in a bundle with a number of accessories and the movie "Spider-Man 2" on UMD, a new disc format developed specifically for the PSP.

Movie's for the Sony PSP: The Sony PSP isn't just the most the most powerful portable gaming system. The PSP will also have many moves for you to see.

"PlayStation Portable as a multimedia device, announcing plans to release more movies formatted to play on the handheld game machine.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment said action films "XXX," "Hellboy," "Resident Evil 2" and "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" will be available for the PSP in mid-April, a few weeks after the device launches in North America. Additional movie releases on the new Universal Media Disc (UMD) optical media format used by the PSP will be made monthly thereafter, according to the announcement.

Sony revealed plans for the PSP last year, positioning it as potential breakthrough machine that would do for digital media what the Walkman did for analog music. Besides the new UMD media format, the device includes built-i wireless networking and 3D graphics capabilities.

While Sony is primarily marketing the device as a game machine, the company also has been gradually emphasizing its capabilities as a music and video device. The company announced last week that the PSP would go on sale in North America on March 24 as part of a package that includes a UMD copy of the hit movie Spider-Man 2." Sony PSP to ship in UK on 29 April - Amazon: Originally due to ship late March, a couple of dates surfaced for the European launch.

The PSP ship date confusion on Amazon.co.uk's site, was 18 March. Another, said to be mentioned in information sent by Sony to its reseller channel, was 25 March.

But with the US date now officially revealed - it's 24 March - but no timeframe given for the console's arrival in Europe, both dates are questionable.

The updated Amazon page says the PSP will ship on 29 April 2005, more than a month later than previously expected. If the date is accurate, it means Sony is likely to miss its global shipment target of 3m PSPs by 31 March 2005, the last day of Sony's current fiscal year.

PSP 50GB Hard Drive, Rumor: Sony PSP with a 50 GB Hard Drive? Many gaming sites are reporting that the Sony PSP will come with a 50 GB hard drive.

Would this make the PSP an iPod killer? I think that it would make it a Portable Media Player (PMP) Killer and maybe an iPod killer too. Not necessarily an iPod killer, just because some think the iPod is cool. I the iPod will lose some sales to PSP. I see no need to buy a ipod to plat music when my PSP can do that plus much more.

Why would you carry around an iPod when you can use your Sony PSP to play games, listen to music, and watch videos?

Some Fast PSP Tips!

USB & USB Cable. While in USB mode, the PSP acts as a Storage Interface to its inserted DUO Pro Memory Stick (if available). This mounts a drive on your Pc, or adds a new drive into 'My Computer' on Windows.

The PSP does NOT come with a USB cable. The PSP has a typical Mini-USB connector on it, and should work with any standard USB to Mini-USB cable that may have come with a digital camera, cell phone, MP3 player, etc. Or, you can buy one from a computer store for about $20. or less. (estimate) The device DOES support USB2.0 for high-speed transfers with compatible machines.

Video 320X240: The PSP only seems to support videos in 320x240 dimension, which is NOT widescreen. However, if you squish a 16:9 picture (for example, from a widescreen DVD) to 320x240, there IS an option to stretch the image back out on the PSP. The quality is far from DVD, but it's not THAT bad. Anything that is not 320x240 will be recognized as "incompatible" by the PSP.

PSP Videos must be named like M4VXXXXX.MP4 (replace the 'X's with random numbers)... and yes it has to be capitalized like that. The PSP will ignore all other files including lowercase ones like '.mp4'
