Sony to Release Web Browser for PSP: Sony officials said the company will release a software upgrade that will let the PlayStation Portable video game system surf the Web without a cumbersome software trick.
The free software patch will be available next week in Japan, said Ken Kutaragi, chief executive of Sony Corp's game unit.
The PSP comes with a built-in antenna for wireless Internet access, but the only way to use it for surfing the Web has been to modify a limited browsing feature in the racing game "Wipeout Pure."
Sony also said it will launch a white version of the PSP, which is otherwise black. The white version will be sold in Japan only.
The paperback-sized device launched last year in Japan and this spring in the United States. About 5 million have been sold since then.
The announcements were made during a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. strategy event which also showcased several games for the company's PlayStation 3 console, which hits store shelves next spring and is expected to compete with new hardware from rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. (AP)

Sony battles hackers over hijacked games: Hackers have cracked piracy protections on Sony Corp's PlayStation Portable in the United States, the latest chapter in the company's battle to block unauthorized game use on its new hand-held device.
The world's top maker of video game consoles rolled out a downloadable fix for the software flaw that opened the door for the latest attack by hackers, who quickly cracked the original version of the PSP shortly after its release in Japan late last year.
In their latest move, hackers have enabled PSP users to download some games from pirate Web sites onto removable memory sticks and then to insert the games to run on the PSP.
Currently available titles include "Mercury," Ubisoft's "Lumines," "Coded Arms" from Konami, Taito Corp.'s "Puzzle Bobble" and Sony's own "Intelligent License," according to gaming Web sites.
The new game duplicating trick works on the PSP's 1.5 version firmware, which serves as the PSP operating system. The PSP was released in the U.S. in March with the 1.5 version firmware.
Sony released firmware version 1.51 in May, patching the hole that made room for the hack. Upcoming game titles will require PSP users run updated firmware, a move aimed at preventing users from copying games.
Sony Computer Entertainment America said in an e-mailed statement that hacking or the operation of "homebrew" software programs may damage the PSP, and void the warranty.
The PSP boasts a high-resolution viewing screen and has been in the sights of technology enthusiasts and software programmers, who want to use it to run copies of everything from games and music to e-books to movies.
Groups of hackers are close to releasing new technology that would allow any copied game -- rather than the current, limited set -- to be played on the PSP, an editor at gaming site PS2NFO.com, who identified himself as "CJ," said in an e-mail on Tuesday.
The PSP European launch is set for September.

Sony denies seeking PSP customer data: Sony is dismissing news that it's asking online stores for customer information to track shipments of the company's PlayStation Portable game console in the United Kingdom.
Published reports out of Britain suggest that Sony is using the knowledge to confiscate any unauthorized product being shipped to consumers before the official launch date of Sept. 1.
Sony's president of consumer sales, Stan Glasgow, said that rather than targeting customers, the company is going to court on Monday to ask for an injunction against companies that participate in the underground market for the devices, sometimes referred to as the "gray market."
"We are fully aware of the gray market situation and we are trying to address the problem," Glasgow said, "but I seriously doubt that Sony would pursue any criminal action against individuals. It's just something that we wouldn't do."
Sony is getting firm with online retailers that participate in what it calls "parallel importing" of PSP products from the U.S. and Japan. Sony president David Reeves told Gamesindustry.biz that the company sent more than 600 letters asking individuals and companies to stop selling import PSP devices on eBay.
The PSP, a $249.99 portable console for playing video games and movies, is already on sale in Japan and the United States. Shipments into the United Kingdom were delayed by about six months to make sure the company had enough for its U.S. launch.
U.K. customers clamoring for the $249.99 consoles have been turning to online retailers to fulfill their gaming desires, often paying a $100 premium to get their hands on one. (CNET News.com)

Sony's PlayStation Portable to get first pornos: At least eight pornographic videos will go on sale in Japan exclusively for the PSP, the console Sony is billing as the multimedia Walkman of the 21st century that plays both games and videos.
A Tokyo-based sex-video maker declared on its website that on July 8 it will release the world's first adult UMDs, optical discs that play on a PSP. The five titles carry price tags from 2,800 yen or 3,800 yen (25 or 35 dollars).
Another Tokyo company will launch three titles on July 16.
For its part, Sony said it had no power to stop the release of the PSP porn videos.
"It is difficult for us to impose restrictions," said Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Koichiro Katsurayama.
He said Sony had shared the specifications for UMDs which do not need approval by the company, unlike PSP game titles which are all licensed.
It is also up to the porn video makers whether they will impose regional restrictions, such as blocking users from playing videos released in Japan on PSPs bought abroad.
The Sony spokesman said the PSP had a locking function that would let worried parents prevent their children from seeing adult videos on the game machine.
He dismissed any idea that Sony saw porn as a commercial boost for the PSP, much in the way that adult titles helped spread videocassette players in the 1970s and 1980s.
"We have no intention of spreading (the PSP) by relying on such titles," he said.
Sony released the PSP in Japan in December and in North America in March in hopes of cracking into Nintendo's dominance of the handheld game-machine market. (AP)

Hackers Run Unauthorized Programs on PSP: Gaming enthusiasts have figured out how to run unauthorized programs and games on the U.S. version of Sony Corp.'s new handheld game console.
Like its rivals, Sony had tried to keep its new PlayStation Portable on a tight leash, installing controls so it couldn't run programs and games not vetted and licensed by the company.
But the PSP, released in the United States in March, has been the target of fervent attempts to unlock its capabilities, which go beyond any previous handheld game machine.
Sony's restrictions were defeated by a program disseminated on the Internet this week. It requires two memory cards, which are switched while the PSP is working.
The exploit may not be practical or safe (an accompanying warning says it could cause damage if done improperly), but it represents a challenge to Sony's policy of tight control and opens the possibility that PSP games could be pirated.
Sony has previously taken a hard line against those who install unauthorized software on its products. In 2001, it went after a Web site that provided software for the Aibo robot dog, saying he was altering their product without a license.
Sony officials did not immediately return requests for comment Wednesday on the latest hack.
The hack works on PSPs with version 1.5 of the "firmware," the equivalent of a computer's operating system. Version 1.5 is the original firmware version for U.S. PSPs, but Sony in May released version 1.51 for users to download. The hack does not work on the updated firmware.
The earliest version the PSP, released late last year in Japan, was hacked several months ago. (AP)

Sony releases new Japanese PSP patch: Sony Computer Entertainment has released a new firmware patch for Japanese PSPs that updates the devices' system software to version 1.52.
According to SCE, the update will strengthen security on the PSP's system software and allow UMD music to be selected from the music option rather than the video option on the menu screen. The 13MB update patch is available at the official Japanese PlayStation Web site. Sony Japanese official Web site. (GameSpot)

iTunes for your Sony PSP!: Infomation Appliance Associates (IAA) said that it has ported its PocketMac software to the Sony PSP handheld game console, allowing users to sync their OS X address books, view their iPhotos, or listen to their iTunes playlists on the PSP, which is quickly becoming a platform for third-party software development.
In addition to the
exploit allowing users to browse the Web from their PSP, a group of developers is being organized to port a version of the Linux operating system to the console. The software, available for download for just $9.95 from the IAA web site, uses either a standard USB cable or a Sony Memory Stick flash card to load the software, videos, and music.
A user's contact information is saved as an image file onto the PSP, allowing the user to save and port the information to the console. The software supports both Microsoft Entourage and the Apple OS X contact system.
That makes the software similar to iPSP and PSPWare, two other "integration" products on the market. Source: extremetech.com

Security update patch out for Japanese PSP's: Sony Computer Entertainment has released a security update patch for the PSP that upgrades its firmware to version 1.51. The patch's release was surprisingly quick, as the company announced it just yesterday. For owners of the Japanese PSP, the 14MB update patch is available on the handheld's official Web site. Sony has not disclosed what kind of security issues the patch fixes upon installation.
Coincidentally, Sony's patch comes only days after reports that hackers have cracked the code for the PSP's media, the Universal Media Disc. Some games have been uploaded to the Internet, but currently there is no way to write UMD discs. Source: CNET NEWS.com

Hackers figure out file extraction from Sony UMD: Software developers have figured out how to extract files from the Universal Media Discs used in Sony Corp new PlayStation Portable handheld video game device, though there is no way to play the games extracted from those discs.
Some details of the exploit were posted Wednesday night on the Web site PS2nfo.com, along with lists showing all the files pulled off the game discs for "Ridge Racers," "Wipeout Pure" and "Vampire Chronicles."
The games are not yet playable because there is no way to burn UMDs from scratch, and the PSP does not accommodate larger discs. However, the site said the ability to look through the games' file structures could still be instructive for developers.
A spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment of America was not immediately available for comment.
Sony released the PSP on March 24 in North America, and the device has sold well since. Movie studios are gearing up to release some of their films on the UMD format, though it was not immediately clear if the techniques used to extract the game files would also work for films. (Reuters)

New Sony PSP Media Recorder: A Japanese company is developing a new media recorder that can record video straight from a TV or DVD player to a memory card. The device can save in a variety of formats including the formats used for the PSP and Player video attachment for the GBA SP and Nintendo DS.
The price for the Media Recorder device is about $150. The Media Recorder is a small, sleek black device with AV inputs and four buttons. The buttons allow you to start recording, select format and mode. I maybe a way to control quality as well. Sounds like a must have for anyone who wants to do routine television program recording for their PSP. More from the original Tech Japan
"RockRidge Sound Japan Corporation will release the "Media Recorder VRX-02" this summer, a video recorder that can record MPEG-4 to SD Memory Card and Memory Stick. The company is aiming for a July release, and the product is listed at Open Price. Estimates indicate it should cost around 15,000 yen. Sales will be conducted by Taxan Corporation.
This is an MPEG-4 recorder that can record to memory cards without the use of a computer. It has only one card slot, and using miniSD and such requires an adapter. The supported memory cards include SD Memory Card, miniSD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, and Memory Stick PRO Duo.
The body is black with a luster finish, and with its blue display, "is designed to make you think of a stealth bomber or space fighter." By connecting it to a TV or video deck with the AV cable, and pushing "record," TV programs can be recorded to the memory card.
The four buttons on the unit will begin recording, and also allow for selecting recording format and mode. The unit will recognize input signals coming from video recorders on timers, so it can record on a set basis.
Its recording format is MPEG-4. 3GPP, 3GPP2, ASP MP4, and Mobile Movie are supported as file formats. Besides mobile phones, it can also create files for PSP and the "Playan" video attachment for Gameboy Advance SP and Nintendo DS.
Three recording modes are available: Super Fine (320 x 240 dot, 30fps), Fine (320 x 240 dot, 15 fps), and Normal (176 x 144 dot, 15 fps). The external dimensions are 210 x 145 x 35mm (W x D x H)."
