PSP Gaming System: Convert Your DVD Movies & Videos to your Sony PSP: This is the fast and short version of how to convert and install videos on to your PSP gaming system. This page will be updated from time to time with all the hacks, tricks and information that I find. So stop by from time to time for updates and more information.

You need to convert your videos to MPEG-4 to use on the Sony PSP gaming system. Sony sells software to convert your videos to MPEG-4 at $20.00 USD. This is the easiest way to cover your videos, the software is called MSSW-IC2 Image Converter 2 SoftwareMSSW-IC2. There is also the free way using free software and some of your time you to covert videos yourself.

All the videos you put on your Sony PSP will go on to the formatted Memory Stick Duo in the special folder named MP_ROOT\100MNV01. You will need to make this folder using the setup2 zip file (5MB) you can download the file at the Sony PSP Connect site. Once you have the special folder on the Memory Stick Duo, just put the MPED-4 video in the special folder. There is a step by step how to format and make the special folder here at PSP Connect.com It's very easy, you may want to buy a bigger Memory Stick Duo for all you videos.

Sony PSP Connect hosts currently 20 videos for free download. Commercials, Movie Trailers, comic episodes are amongst the clips. Sony says each week new clips are made available. The clips have different length.

Memory Stick Duo The bigger the better!

Start by unziping the 3GP_Converter031.zip file, click on the 3GP Converter setup.exe it's all in Japanese, but don't get worried. Select English radio button, then select "Customized: MP4 for PSP (Direct, renamed)" then click on Apply. This is the conversion setting for the MPEG-4 video files that you can play on the PSP system.

The Sony PSP MPEG-4 video files need a special name or the video won't recognized. The video named SpiderMan.MP4 won't be recognized, but M4VXXXXX.MP4 (replace the 'X's with random numbers). will work. If your converted videos aren't recognized you can try renaming them.

You can convert MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Windows Media Player (WMV) videos and maybe more, I'll try more later. To PSP MPEG-4 video format. DVD movie have to be converted to MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV first (using DVD Decrypter), then you can convert the video to PSP MPEG-4 using 3GP Converter program.

Start the 3GP Converter program by clicking on the "3GP_Converter.exe program". The window is open, you need to choose a output directory. You can name you directory My PSP videos or what ever you want to name the folder on you hard drive. This folder will hold the converted PSP MP4 video files.

You can right click on the "3GP_Converter.exe program" and pick send to desktop to create a shortcut.

A popup window may ask you to install QuickTime Authoring before you convert, just click on "Do it now" button. No QuickTime popup massage for me.

The MP4 video quality settings for your MP4 video. All converted videos will have QVGA (320x240) resolution. you may choose from 15 to 29.97 frames per second, the higher 29.97 fps gives you a more smoother video.

The quality settings is the video bitrate, the higher the bitrate, the better quality your video will turn out, with the highest quality being 1500kbps.

The audio quality, you can choose from 32kbps (lower quality) to 128kbps (highest quality). The higher quality setting you choose, the slower it will be to convert. The ‘QVGA/29.97fps/1500kbps Stereo/128kbps’ settings is highest quality setting that 3GP supports.

All of these settings will effect the quality of the converted video. If you want the best quality video and audio go with a high setting. Low settings will give you lower quality video and audio and a much smaller video file.

After you picked you settings you can drag you video file you wont to convert to PSP MPEG-4 in to the "Drag and Drop here" window.

That's it!

When the 3GP Converter program is finished converting the video file. You can find the video in your new PSP video folder you made. The converted video file name will look like "M4VXXXXX.MP4"

Now you can copy the MPEG-4 video to you PSP in the special folder named MP_ROOT\100MNV01. That where all you video go on the Memory Stick Duo.

Now just play your PSP video, you can adjust the screen size to Full Screen for wide screen. There are four screen size display modes.

Tip: Sony offers via their Connect service free video downloads for the Sony PSP. Sony also explains with a tutorial how to download, transfer and play video on the PSP.

The Connect PSP site offers a setup.zip download that only is a video file with the correct folder structure to configure the correct folders on the memory stick. You do not need to download that. Just create the folders MP_ROOT/100MNV01 on the Memorystick. The video in the setup is only a Sony welcome message.

I downloaded the Stealth Movie Trailer (some kind of new Top Gun Movie). The videos come as zip files. In the zip file are a MP4 video file and a THM thumbnail file. Great to watch on the PSP. You can download here!

Tip: If you need a video program that can play back MPEG-4, use Apple's QuickTime or VLC with the proper codecs installed. Straying from the built-in resolutions of 320x240 and 368x208 seems to produce files that won't play back. There are only two framerates the PSP seems to like: 29.97fps and 14.985fps.
