Palm Offers Refund to M130 Owners: 9/05/02 (AP) - Palm Inc. is offering a full refund to customers who purchased its new m130 handheld digital assistant after the company acknowledged the model has about 6,000 fewer color combinations for its screen display than previously advertised. Palm sent an e-mail to registered m130 users late Wednesday offering a full refund.

Those who choose to keep their m130 — which sells for $249 — can receive a free download of the Palm version of the video game SimCity, a $29.95 value.

The Milpitas-based company apologized to customers recently and acknowledged that the m130 supports about 58,621 color combinations — not the "more than 65,000 colors" the company had advertised since the product came out in March.

Palm describes the refund offer on its m130 Web page and says the difference between the 58,621 color combinations on the m130 model and the 65,536 colors on a more expensive model is an "approximate 11 percent difference."

But the m130 actually offers only 4,096 unique colors, the remaining thousands of "color combinations" are simply the effect of dithering, the addition and removal of some color pixels to give the digital effect of hues or shades.

Ken Wirt, Palm's vice president of marketing said the difference between the display of the m130 and the higher end m515 with 65,000 colors was negligible. "When you look at the screens, you can't really tell the difference," Wirt said.

Nonetheless, Palm was sued Aug. 22 by two men who accused the company of "unfair competition and fraudulent, unfair, deceptive and false advertising," for the misleading color combo information.

"This is certainly a positive development for Palm consumers that Palm has decided to make refunds," said Jonathan Shub, the lawyer who filed the suit on behalf of the men. "However, the suit proceeds while we evaluate the process by which Palm is making these refunds available and the notification process that they are implementing."

Shub suggested such a refund offer should have been made earlier and been more widely publicized by Palm. Palm said it has received only eight inquiries about the color combination discrepancy.

Casio Cassiopeia E-125

Casio Cassiopeia E-125, with its fast processor, colorful screen, and Type II CompactFlash slot is a darn good device. The E-125 may not be the prettiest or best shaped PDA but it is the hands down leader in performance and expandibility. If what you want is a truely functional hand held computer there is no other choice. With its expansion options and full 98/NT apps compatibility it is the only choice for the professional. E-125 is Powered by a 150-MHz processor, this handheld has enough power to run a few applications at once, but it bogs down if you have four or five applications running simultaneously--a common problem with Pocket PCs. The casio has embraced USB cradles, so we were able to load new applications in a flash. With 32MB of RAM built in, the E-125 has plenty of room to store apps and data. But if you want to use this as an MP3 player as well as an organizer, you'd better take advantage of the CompactFlash expansion slot. It can accommodate Type II cards, such as IBM's Microdrive, modems, and Ethernet cards. But its $599 list price makes the E-125 slightly more expensive than buying an iPaq and a CompactFlash sleeve.

The E-125 has the same terrific 65,536-color LCD seen on previous Casio Pocket PC devices. When checking out Web graphics, we were able to notice the subtle changes in color that we're used to seeing on a desktop monitor. However, the display has a pretty narrow viewing angle and is barely legible in direct sunlight. For those reasons, we prefer the iPaq's reflective screen, even though it displays only 4,096 colors.

Pros: Zippy processor; supports Type II CompactFlash cards. Cons: Expensive; shaped like a brick.
