Library of Congress seeks digital library to build bridges between cultures
The US Library of Congress launched an ambitious campaign to create an online database of rare books, manuscripts, posters, stamps and other artifacts, available to users around the world via the Internet.
James Billington, head of the Library of Congress, which houses one of the world's most exhaustive libraries, said that the proposed "World Digital Library" would contain rare items from national libraries from around the world.
The online collection would include precious items from Europe, Asia and Islamic nations stretching from Indonesia through Central and West Africa.
Billington, who said he hopes to finance the initiative with private and public funds, said the Library of Congress has accepted three million dollars from Google Inc. as its first corporate contribution.
In an opinion piece in the Washington Post Tuesday, Billington hailed the venture as a way to build bridges between cultures across the globe.
"This would offer the promise of bringing people closer together by celebrating the depth and uniqueness of different cultures in a single global undertaking," he wrote.
