All About Mp3s

The Basics of Mp3s

MP3 stands for MPEG 1:
By Raymond Garcia
WebTechGeek

MP3 stands for MPEG1 (Motion Picture Experts Group) Layer 3. It's a digital audio compression format built from over 10 years of psycho-acoustical research. MP3 squishes down sound files 10-15 times smaller than a parent file. MP3 file retains most of the perceived audio fidelity by stripping out the waveforms that the human ear doesn't process. Not nearly CD-quality if you do a comparison on headphones you will hear a quality defense. MP3 is nonetheless a tremendous breakthrough in terms of sound quality for a high compression rate. Altered our music listening habits, and brought concerns about piracy violently to the forefront of our attention.

Amid the confusion of this technological revolution we can't afford to lose track of what's legal and what's not. Record companies are serving papers to individual audio pirates. For those who create their own music, the laws are quite simple. You have every right to encode your own composition to .MP3 format and distribute it on the Internet. Just make sure that you solely own the rights and permissions to the composition. It is also legal to encode MP3s of music that you've bought for personal use for home listening, but it's illegal to give anyone copies. MP3 music quality is good but you do lose some of the music quality in the conversion to MP3. So I don't think music listeners will pay for MP3 music instead of CDs.

CD stores songs as digital information. The data on a CD uses an uncompressed, high-resolution format. Here's what happens to create a CD. Music is sampled 44,100 times per second, The samples are 2 bytes (16 bits) long. Separate samples are taken for both the left and right speakers in a stereo system. Therefore a CD stores a huge number of bits for each second of music: 44,100 samples/second * 16 bits/sample * 2 channels = 1,411,200 bits per second 1.4 million bits per second is 176,000 bytes per second. If an average song is 3 minutes long, then the average song on a CD consumes about 33 million bytes of space. 33 Mbytes is a lot of space for one song, and it is especially large when you consider most people have slow Internet connections. A 56 kbit modem it would take something close to 2 hours to download one 33 Mbytes song.

Note: When your encoder rip a .WAV file to a compressed audio format (MP3), it compresses it while retaining the same clarity and range as that found on CD. , but some of the information gets lost, theoretically it's information that you aren't capable of hearing anyway , but some people can hear it.

MP3 Q & A
By Raymond, WebTechGeek

1. Q. What are Mp3's. - A. Mp3's (namehere.mp3) compressed music files, a well-known compression techniques shrinks the music by a factor of 10.

5. Q. How do I play Mp3's on my PC? - A. You need to use a Multimedia player installed on you PC. You can use Windows Multimedia player if your using Windows OS it maybe pre-installed, or you can download and install it or install another Multimedia player here.

6. Q. Is the sound quality of MP3 better than a CD? - A. No. MP3 is a compression format, it throws away some of the information from a CD format. MP3 format uses characteristics of the human ear to design the compression algorithm. Example: There are certain sounds that the human ear cannot hear, there are two sounds playing simultaneously, we can only hear the louder one. Certain parts of a song can be eliminated without significantly hurting the quality of the music for the listener. Compressing the rest of the music using well-known compression techniques shrinks the music by a factor of 10. When you creating an MP3 file, what you have is "near-CD" quality. The MP3 music file will not sound exactly the same as the original music CD, because some of the music has been removed, but it will be very close.

7. Q. Can I change, rename, amplify, trim, edit my Mp3 files? - A. Yes, there are many Mp3 utilities files to choose from here.

Some newer portable Mp3 players come with car adopters to play your Mp3's on you car receiver. Portable wireless FM Transmitter used with your portable Mp3 player are very popular. You can also covert your Mp3 files and copy them to a CD disc to play on a standard automobile CD/CDR player or home CD/CDR player. Use one of these Multimedia players to convert and copy to CD disc.

10. Q. Are MP3's legal? - A. Yes, Mp3's are merely a data compression format, very legal. But, what you do with that Mp3 format can be legal or illegal. The distribution of music in MP3 format over the Internet has prompted much legal debate and action over copyright law. In fact, the Recording Industry Association of America has won many suit against users that illegal trade and distribute Mp3 files. This Q&A By Raymond, WebTechGeek.com.

MP3 PRO! The next generation MP3

MP3 PRO! The next generation MP3 codec has been released: by Raymond, WebTechGeek.com - This is the official version from the same ones that brought us the Original MP3 format. MP3 PRO AUDIO TECHNOLOGY: The world's most popular audio compression format gets even better! mp3PRO audio technology is both backwards and forwards compatible with mp3 and creates files that are 1/2 or less the size of original mp3 files, with great sound quality. Developed by Coding Technologies, mp3PRO utilizes both Coding Technologies' codec enhancement technology and the pioneering work in the field of perceptual audio coding covered under the basic mp3 patents owned by Thomson and Fraunhofer.

About mp3PRO and compatibility: Using advanced psychoacoustics techniques and music structure analysis, mp3PRO creates files that are more compact than original mp3 files, with equal or better sound quality and complete backwards and forwards compatibility. Your old mp3 files will play completely normally on a new mp3PRO player. New mp3Pro files will play normally on old mp3 players, but without the dramatic mp3Pro improvements. Of course, new mp3PRO files played on a new mp3PRO decoder will provide the optimal listening experience!

How the mp3PRO technology works: When making an mp3PRO file, the new mp3PRO encoder splits audio recordings into two parts. One part analyzes the low frequency band information and encodes it into a normal mp3 stream. The second part analyzes the high frequency band information and encodes it into a part of the mp3 stream that is normally ignored by old mp3 decoders.

More Music on your media: Offering 128 kbps (kilo bits per second) performance at a 64 kbps-encoding rate, mp3PRO doubles the digital music capacity of flash memory and of compact discs. For example, traditional audio CDs hold about 15 songs, and an mp3 CD can hold 150 or more songs encoded at 128 kbps. In the near future, when mp3 CD players incorporate the mp3PRO decoder, consumers will be able to store over 300 songs on an mp3PRO encoded Compact Disc. Sound Quality: The bottom line is mp3PRO provides superior sound quality at lower bit rates that traditional mp3. MP3 Pro Get it here Free!

Burn to CD those Napster To Go songs for free! 5/15/05

The New Napster’s $15 a month, all-you-can-download Napster To Go service, someone’s already found a way to burn unlimited amounts of music to CDs for free.

With Napster To Go you can download as much music as you want and transfer it to a portable device, but it normally costs 99 cents to burn a track to a CD and if you stop paying the monthly subscription fee you lose access to your entire collection:(

I'm not going to advise you to do anything wrong;-) but apparently if you install Winamp along with the Output Stacker plug-in you can convert those protected WMA files to WAV files and then burn them to CD without free.

How to here!

Fewer People Paying for Music Downloads - NPD:

Fewer People Paying for Music Downloads - NPD: Apple Computer Inc's iTunes remains the leader in paid digital music downloads, but the number of paying customers for this sector overall has decreased since April, research firm NPD said.

The Port Washington, New York-based market information company said the number of consumers paying for downloads fell to nearly one million users per month in May, June and July from a peak of 1.3 million in April 2004.

NPD said the downturn coincides with the end of promotions and trial price incentives offered by several services.

From December 2003 to July 2004, iTunes remained the dominant destination, commanding nearly 70 percent of music files downloaded legally, while Napster's share for that period was 11 percent.

MusicMatch, RealNetworks Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. each reached a six percent share.

Napster is a unit of Roxio Inc. , while MusicMatch recently agreed to be acquired by Yahoo Inc.

"Our research suggests that at this stage of the business it's not so much about building share as it is about creating demand for paid downloads universally," said Russ Crupnick, vice president of The NPD Group, Inc.

"We've seen that promotion works, but its had a short-term effect so far, which is typical for traditional consumer goods. The trick is in phasing promotions, so that there is a cumulative positive effect on the target market," he said.

Meanwhile, NPD cited no slowdown in the number of households with a member using peer-to-peer (P2P) sites to download music for free, with 6.4 million tallied in July 2004, compared with 5.1 million in August 2003. The numbers rise and fall incrementally month to month. (Reuters)

'Copy-Proof' CDs Cracked with 99-Cent Marker Pen:

Technology buffs have cracked music publishing giant Sony Music's elaborate disc copy-protection technology with a decidedly low-tech method: scribbling around the rim of a disk with a felt-tip marker.

Internet newsgroups have been circulating news of the discovery for the past week, and in typical newsgroup style, users have pilloried Sony for deploying "hi-tech" copy protection that can be defeated by paying a visit to a stationery store.

"I wonder what type of copy protection will come next?" one posting on alt.music.prince read. "Maybe they'll ban markers."

Sony did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Major music labels, including Sony and Universal Music, have begun selling the "copy-proof" discs as a means of tackling the rampant spread of music piracy, which they claim is eating into sales.

The new technology aims to prevent consumers from copying, or "burning," music onto recordable CDs or onto their computer hard drives, which can then be shared with other users over file-sharing Internet services such as Kazaa or Morpheus MusicCity.

SONY AGGRESSIVE ANTI-PIRACY PUSH - Monday, Reuters obtained an ordinary copy of Celine Dion newest release "A New Day Has Come," which comes embedded with Sony's "Key2Audio" technology.

After an initial attempt to play the disc on a PC resulted in failure, the edge of the shiny side of the disc was blackened out with a felt tip marker. The second attempt with the marked-up CD played and copied to the hard drive without a hitch.

Internet postings claim that tape or even a sticky note can also be used to cover the security track, typically located on the outer rim of the disc. And there are suggestions that copy protection schemes used by other music labels can also be circumvented in a similar way.

Sony's proprietary technology, deployed on many recent releases, works by adding a track to the copy-protected disc that contains bogus data. Because computer hard drives are programmed to read data files first, the computer will continuously try to play the bogus track first. It never gets to play the music tracks located elsewhere on the compact disc.

The effect is that the copy-protected disc will play on standard CD players but not on computer CD-ROM drives, some portable devices and even some car stereo systems.
