Installing a Computer Sound Card on your Computer: Web Tech Support. These instructions will work for the majority
of card installation on a Pentium or newer PCs running
Windows 95/98/Me. Try too installation in an UN-carpeted
area to avoid static. Ground yourself by touching a metal
part of the chassis. If possible, use the slot with the
most open space around it.
Be careful not to touch any connectors (chips).
Touch as little as possible on the sound card or inside
your machine. If your computer currently has a sound chip
or if your sound card requires a change in jumpers or
IRQs, installation will be much more complicated. Read

A. You can leave the computer plugged into
the surge suppressor and shut down your computer. Also
you should disconnect all peripherals from the computer
and remove the cover of the chassis.
B. You should ground yourself to your computer.
If you have a grounding strap, put it on and follow its
directions. Otherwise, you can ground yourself by touching
a metal part of the chassis.
C. Remove the existing sound card, if any.
Put the new sound card into that slot if it will fit physically.
D. If your computer doesn't already have
a sound card, find an open PCI slot. The PCI slots are
smaller than ISA slots. Remove the metal plate on the
card's slot holder on the back panel.
E. You need to insert the sound card gently
but firmly into the slot. You can rock the card into position
if necessary, but please don't force it in. Try not to
touch any connectors on the card.
F. You need to connect the cables from the
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to your new sound card.
G. You need to screw the sound card into
slot holder if it has a screw hole. Now, reconnect the
monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Don't forget to connect
speakers to the sound card's ports.
H. You need to turn on the speakers and
restart your computer.
I. If Windows detects the sound card upon
startup, follow instructions to install the card's driver
and additional software. If Windows doesn't't detect sound
card, manually complete the installation using the Add
New Hardware control panel.
J. You need to test your sound card by
Playing a music CD. If it plays OK, shut down computer
and replace cover of computer.
K. If you get no sound check all the wires.
Make shear you plugged the speaker wires to the sound
(out) on your sound card.
Tip: If you do not understand these instructions
or you lack good manual dexterity, have a qualified technician
install the sound card for you. Better safe then sorry!
