Change Your Drive Letter Assignment in Windows: Web Tech Support XP : More people than ever are adding DVD drives,
hard drives, CD-RW drives and the all new DVD-RW drives,
there's one little problem that's occurring to computer
users when they install their new drives, and that is
that their drive letter assignments are messed up.
If your Windows computer has multiple drives,
multiple partitions, or temporarily drive, all can cause
your Windows computer to get a little upset if it shuffles
the existing drive letter assignments around to accommodate
the new hard drive. Or maybe you just want to resign your
computers drive letter assignment, that's OK it your computer.
Just remember don't fix it if it's not broken.
The Steps: Windows NT/XP/2000: Change Your Drive Letter Assignment in Windows
A. First you need to locate the Administrative
Tools folder commonly found inside Control Panel. If using
the new look with Windows XP rather than the classic look,
you'll find Administrative Tools inside Performance and
Maintenance. Depending on how Windows XP has been set
up, it may also be found in other locations such as the
start menu.
B. Once Administrative Tools has been opened,
double click on the Computer Management icon and you’ll
be presented with the all the tools you could ever want
to tinker with, or screw up your computer.
C. Next you will want to double click on
Disk
Management. On the right you will now be presented
with a list of all the fixed drives including their partitions
in the upper pane, and a graphical view including CD ROM
/ DVD ROM drives in the lower pane.
D. Now select “Change Drive Letter
and Paths…” and you will be presented with
this dialog
box. Click on the “Change…” button,
and another box pops up
E. From here it’s a simple case of
clicking on a drive letter and choosing another from the
drop
down list. A personal preference of mine is to select
drive letter Z for removable drives.
F. Next click OK, and you’ll be given
the warning
below. If you’re happy with your change, click YES
and the drive letter now changes in both the upper and
lower panes as you can see below. Change Your Drive Letter Assignment in Windows.
The Steps: Windows 98/Me: Change Your Drive Letter Assignment in Windows.
A. Unfortunately, the earlier versions of
Windows do not have this drive letter management facility
like Windows XP. So if your like me who refuses to upgrade
your operating systems every time Bill Gates needs another
billion dollars, you're stuck .....unless you try this.
B. Here's a neat little freeware utility
that allows drive letter management in Windows 95/98/ME
machines. It's called LetterAssigner,
and "allows you to assign any letter to any drive
in Windows 95/98 and MS-DOS (with a few insignificant
exceptions). You can Download
it now here! It remembers drives by their serial numbers
or by the labels, which provides protection against letter
changes that follow repartitioning or the connection of
new drives. It also prevents non-bootable situations that
may occur when the Windows directory is located on a drive
other than C. The interface offers simple methods to choose
letters, to move them from one drive to another, and to
view the free letter set. Letter Assigner also allows
you to view and change device properties for each drive
easily.
The drive letters that are already assigned
are grayed out, and free letters are in yellow at the
top of the screen. However, you can go ahead and change
any drive to any letter by simply dragging a letter from
the letter bar and "dropping" it on a desired
drive, dragging a desired letter from one drive and dropping
it on another, or several other methods. You can even
clear all drive letter assignments at once and start with
a blank slate. Unfortunately, you will have to restart
your computer if you make any changes, since the drive
letter assignments are invoked only at boot-up. Change Your Drive Letter Assignment in Windows.
