Windows Vista Tip - Restart the Windows Explorer Shell Without Rebooting Windows in Vista:
If your a Windows user, you've probably encountered the occasional computer freeze-up when working with a Windows component as desktop and Windows Explorer or program. Many times, your only recourse seems to be to reboot the your Windows computer, maybe losing any unsaved data in open programs. Now there's a way to fix this type of problem without rebooting your computer and maybe losing your work. Try using the steps listed below. Restart the Windows Explorer Shell Without Rebooting Windows in Vista

When a Windows Vista component freezes and becomes unresponsive, press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Click the Start Task Manager button, as shown in Figure 1.

Click the Processes tab.

In the Image Name column, find the explorer.exe process.

Right-click on explorer.exe and select End Process, as shown in Figure 2.

A. Click the Processes tab.
B. Right-click on explorer.exe.
C. Choose End Process.
7. A Task Manager warning pop-up is displayed asking you to confirm that you really want to end the process. Click Yes to end the process, which should make the desktop, and possibly open applications, temporarily disappear.
8. In Task Manager, which should still be open, click on the File menu, and select New Task (Run...), as shown in Figure 3.

9. Type explorer.exe, as shown in Figure 4, and click OK. The Windows Explorer Shell restarts and should make the desktop, along with applications you had open, reappear. Tip: See more How to's and Tip pages here at WebTechGeek.com.
