Aiptek Pen Cam 2
Aiptek
Pen Cam 2: Price range: $99. Easily mistaken for a
highlighter pen, this pint-sized digital camera/Webcam
fits easily into the shirt pocket of any upstart James
Bond wanna-be. But don't expect international intrigue--or
particularly good pictures--to ensue. The rush to create
a smaller, cheaper, cooler multifaceted gadget, Aiptek
brings us the Pen Cam 2. Sporting a maximum resolution
of High resolution (640 x 480), the Pen Cam 2 won't win
any awards for its photographs. Just the same, the tiny
camera makes an ideal gift for kids, especially for those
in search of an easy way to take pictures for posting
on their personal Web sites.
built in 8 MB of SDRAM: 26 pictures for VGA (High Resolution)
XGA software interpolated (1024 x 768). 107 pictures for
QVGA (Low Resolution) VGA software interpolated (640 x
480). It does all this on two surprisingly long-lasting
AAA batteries. While we don't expect top-notch performance
from such an inexpensive camera, the extremely pixilated
images from the Pen Cam 2 certainly do make you appreciate
the results of better cameras. And since this device lacks
a flash, it's really best suited for outdoor daytime shots.
Giving credit where it's due, though, the Pen Cam Trio
does a surprisingly good job with color reproduction in
proper lighting.
PROS: Tiny, cheap, and fun
to play with; makes a decent Webcam. CONS: The
bad: Low resolution; lousy video frame rates; clunky software.
The bottom line: Fun for kids and teens but not for more
serious users.
